Accurate location tracking is essential when using your ZOLEO satellite communicator, whether for staying connected off-grid, sharing your location with contacts, or sending an emergency SOS. However, location accuracy can sometimes be affected by environmental conditions, GPS signal interference, or smartphone settings.
This article provides best practices to ensure your ZOLEO device gets the most accurate location possible.
Optimize Line of Sight for Better GPS Accuracy
To ensure the best GPS accuracy, keep your ZOLEO device face-up with a clear view of the sky. The best positions include:
- Attached to the top of your backpack or secured to a shoulder strap (ideal for hiking and outdoor use)
- Mounted to a vehicle windshield (for use in a car, truck, or off-road vehicle)
- Avoid placing your ZOLEO inside deep pockets, backpacks, or enclosed spaces, as this may block GPS signals.
Enable Smartphone Permissions to Improve Location Accuracy
Your smartphone's settings can impact GPS accuracy. Granting the right permissions allows the ZOLEO app to:
- Perform essential tasks when connected to your ZOLEO device.
- Maintain GPS accuracy even when your phone is on standby or the app is running in the background.
- Improve accuracy when the ZOLEO device has a weak or lost GPS signal.
The following permissions are strongly suggested to improve location accuracy using your ZOLEO device.
Apple/iOS devices
For the best experience, set Location permission to ‘Always’ and enable Precise Location:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps > ZOLEO.
- Select Location.
- Choose Always and enable Precise Location.
Android devices
Allowing the ZOLEO app to always run in the background ensures the best experience. This setting allows the app to stay connected to your ZOLEO device, enables the app to access the location when on standby or in the background, and prevents the system from putting the app to sleep.
For ZOLEO app version 6.6 or higher:
- Install ZOLEO Mobile App from Google Play.
- When prompted to Allow app to always run in the background, select Continue, then Allow.
For manual permissions on older versions:
Samsung Models:
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps > ZOLEO > Battery.
- Select Unrestricted.
Google Pixel & Most Other Models:
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps > ZOLEO > App Battery Usage.
- Toggle on Allow background usage.
- Tap on Allow background usage next and select Unrestricted.
By ensuring a clear line of sight and granting the right smartphone permissions, you can maximize GPS accuracy on your ZOLEO device. If you require assistance after reviewing this article, contact ZOLEO Customer Care.
