This article explains how to view and understand satellite signal strength in the ZOLEO App and how to get the best signal from your ZOLEO communicator.
Where to Find the Signal Strength
- The status bar is located at the bottom of the ZOLEO app above the four navigation icons. You can find more information at ZOLEO App - Understanding the Status Bar.
- This bar shows the current satellite signal strength.
Understanding the Signal Display
- The signal strength icon uses three bars:
-
- Green bars = signal detected.
- Grey bars = no signal.
-
- It's normal for the signal to fluctuate as satellites enter and exit the line of sight to the device.
How To Check Signal Strength
- Open the ZOLEO App.
- Connect to your ZOLEO device.
- Locate the status bar just above the navigation icons. If you cannot see it, you might have disabled it. Go to Settings > Under the Device section > Connection Status Bar > Enable.
- Tap the upward arrow (⌃) to expand and view detailed device status information.
- Under Satellite Signal, check the number of green bars:
- 0 bars = no signal
- 1-2 bars = weak to moderate signal
-
3 bars = strong signal
Tip: You can tap the Check Messages button or wait for the next message check to view your satellite signal.
How Satellite Signal Works
Your ZOLEO device isn't connected to the satellite network all the time to preserve battery life. Your device will connect to the satellite network during these times:
- When sending messages
- During a message check to receive messages
- When Location Share+ updates are being sent
- When you send a Check-in
- During an SOS Alert
When your device is ON but not connected to the satellite, it is in standby mode, and signal strength will show three grey bars with a clock over them.
How To Get the Best Signal
For the strongest and most reliable connection:
- Make sure your ZOLEO device has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky – no overhead obstructions like trees or buildings.
- Place the device facing up, outdoors, and away from metallic or electronic interference.
- Avoid using the device indoors or under cover when expecting or sending a satellite message.
- Try holding the device flat with the logo facing the sky during message check or while sending messages.
