If your ZOLEO device is sending Check-In messages that show an incorrect date — such as the year 2015 — this article explains why it happens and walks you through how to fix it. The issue is caused by a satellite time epoch reset on the device and can be fully resolved in two steps.
Why ZOLEO Check-In Messages Show the Wrong Date
Your ZOLEO device relies on the satellite network to keep its internal clock accurate. When the device's satellite time reference is lost or reset, it reverts to a default date, which may appear as 2015 or another past year. This is known as a satellite time epoch issue.
This can happen after extended periods without a satellite connection, following certain device states where the time reference was not properly maintained. It does not affect the core functionality of your ZOLEO device — it is simply a clock synchronization issue that is straightforward to resolve.
The fix involves two steps: performing a factory reset to clear the incorrect time reference, and then giving your ZOLEO device time outdoors to re-acquire the correct satellite time. Once the device has synced with the satellite network, your Check-In messages will display the accurate date going forward.
Step 1: Factory Reset Your ZOLEO Device
Performing a factory reset on your ZOLEO device clears the incorrect satellite time reference and prepares the device to sync with the correct time. Follow the steps below to complete the factory reset. You can also follow along with our video guide.
- Power on your ZOLEO device.
- Press and hold the Power button and the Check-In button simultaneously until you hear the confirmation tone — a siren-like sound.
- The tone will stop; however, your ZOLEO device is still completing the factory reset. Do not power it off.
- Once the reset is complete, you'll hear the power-down sound and your ZOLEO device will power off automatically.
Step 2: Re-acquire Satellite Time After the Factory Reset
After the factory reset, your ZOLEO device needs to sync with the satellite network to obtain the correct date and time. It's important to complete this step before reconnecting to the ZOLEO app, so the device can acquire the correct time without interference.
- Take your ZOLEO device outside to an open area with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.
- Power the device back on.
- Place the device flat with the ZOLEO logo facing upward toward the sky.
- Leave your ZOLEO device outside for approximately 15 minutes. Do not connect it to the ZOLEO app during this time.
- After 15 minutes, press and release the Check-In button once to send a test Check-In via satellite.
Once your ZOLEO device has successfully synced with the satellite network and acquired the correct time, you can reconnect it to your ZOLEO app. Your Check-In messages should now display the correct date going forward.
