How to Send an SOS

This article explains how to send an SOS alert using your ZOLEO device or the ZOLEO app.

Instructions differ slightly between the ZOLEO 1000 and the ZOLEO 1500. Follow the section for your device model.

Before You Begin

Before sending an SOS:

• Ensure your device has a clear view of the sky.
• Keep your device powered on throughout the SOS process.
• If you are sending an SOS alert from the ZOLEO App, make sure your smartphone is connected to your ZOLEO device.

Note: The ZOLEO App is not required to declare an SOS.

Send an SOS Alert Using Your ZOLEO Device

ZOLEO 1000

Note: If the device is powered off, pressing and holding the SOS button for approximately three seconds powers on the device and starts the SOS process.

1. Ensure the ZOLEO device is on and facing up with a clear view of the sky.
2. Lift the SOS protective cover.
3. Press & hold the SOS button for 3 seconds, then wait.
   • A 10-second countdown will begin, and the device will emit the emergency tone.
   • The LEDs on the ZOLEO device will begin to SPIN RED (circle pattern), indicating your alert is sending.
   • Important: Wait for the SOS alert to be sent.
4. When the SOS alert has been successfully sent and acknowledged:
   • The ZOLEO device will emit a positive ascending tone.
   • The SOS LED will begin to DOUBLE-BLINK RED, indicating SOS is ACTIVE.

Important: During the 10-second countdown, you can cancel the SOS alert by pressing and holding the SOS button for five seconds. Once the countdown has ended, you must wait until the SOS alert has been sent before cancelling it. For more information, refer to How To Cancel an SOS.

ZOLEO 1500

Note: If the device is powered off, pressing and holding the SOS button for approximately three seconds powers on the device and starts the SOS process.

1. Ensure the ZOLEO device is on and facing up with a clear view of the sky.
2. Lift the SOS protective cover.
3. Press the SOS button ONCE.
4. The device immediately begins sending the SOS alert. 
5. While the SOS alert is being transmitted:
   • The LEDs on the ZOLEO device will all SPIN RED (circle pattern), indicating your alert is sending.
   • The emergency tone is emitted.
6. When the SOS alert has been successfully sent and acknowledged:
   • The SOS LED will begin to DOUBLE-BLINK RED, indicating SOS is ACTIVE.

Important: Unlike the ZOLEO 1000, the ZOLEO 1500 does not include a countdown before sending an SOS alert. Once the SOS button is pressed, the SOS alert begins immediately. 

To cancel the SOS alert after it has been sent, press and hold the SOS button for eight seconds. For more information, refer to How to Cancel an SOS.

Send an SOS Alert Using the ZOLEO App

1. Ensure the ZOLEO device is face up with a clear view of the sky and is linked to the ZOLEO App on your smartphone.
2. Navigate to the SOS tab (bottom menu).
3. Press & hold the SEND SOS button for 3 seconds (until the button animation has ended).
4. A 10-second countdown will begin.
   • During this time, the SOS alert can be cancelled without alerting the emergency response provider. To cancel, tap the CANCEL SOS ALERT button.
5. Once the countdown has ended, the SOS progress screen will be displayed.
   • Important: Wait for your location coordinates and the SOS alert to be sent.
6. When the SOS alert has been successfully sent.
   • The SOS banner at the top of the screen will show SOS ACTIVE.
   • A CHAT NOW button will appear.
7. Tap the CHAT NOW button to begin messaging with the SOS Response Agent.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

• The emergency response coordination provider will attempt to communicate with you via messaging over the ZOLEO app. 
• If you do not respond, they will continue with the emergency response protocol. Local authorities or search and rescue services will be dispatched to your location.
• Until you cancel the SOS, an SOS alert containing your location coordinates is sent every six (6) minutes.

Keep your device powered on and maintain a clear view of the sky when possible until the emergency has resolved.
