This article explains how to share your ZOLEO device between two smartphones.
Sharing a ZOLEO device involves two steps:
- Disconnect the device from the current smartphone.
- Connect it to the new smartphone.
These instructions apply to both the ZOLEO 1000 and the ZOLEO 1500.
Before You Begin
Before sharing your ZOLEO device:
- The current user must disconnect the device from the ZOLEO app.
- The new user must install the ZOLEO app and sign in with their own MyZOLEO account.
- Bluetooth must be enabled on the new user's smartphone, and Bluetooth permissions must be granted to the ZOLEO App.
- If the new user is connecting a ZOLEO 1500, they will need the Bluetooth PIN printed on the label on the bottom of the device during the linking process.
Disconnecting the ZOLEO Device from Your Smartphone
Before a second person can connect to your ZOLEO device, you need to disconnect it from your phone in the ZOLEO app.
Disconnecting in the app does not affect your service plan or account. It only removes the link between your phone and the ZOLEO hardware.
To disconnect your phone from the ZOLEO device:
- Open the Settings menu by tapping the gear icon at the bottom-right of your screen.
- Select Disconnect From ZOLEO Device.
- Tap Yes to confirm.

Once disconnected:
- Your smartphone will no longer send or receive SMS or email messages through the ZOLEO device.
- You can continue using the ZOLEO App for app-to-app messaging over cellular or Wi-Fi.
- Your existing conversations remain available on your Chats screen.
If you see a "Connect to your ZOLEO Device" prompt when sending a message after disconnecting, go to Settings > Follow-Me Messaging and disable Follow-Me SMS & Email.
Connecting a New Smartphone to Your ZOLEO Device
After you disconnect your phone, the new user can connect their smartphone to the ZOLEO device. Before they begin, they will need Bluetooth enabled on their phone with permissions granted to the ZOLEO app.
To check Bluetooth permissions:
- iOS: Go to Settings > Apps > ZOLEO and make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- Android: Go to Settings > Apps > ZOLEO > Permissions and confirm Nearby Devices is set to Allowed.
The new user will also need the ZOLEO app installed and their own MyZOLEO account. For help installing the app and creating an account, see How to Install the ZOLEO App.
Once the app is set up, please follow the instructions in How To Link Your ZOLEO Device to the ZOLEO App.
The linking process varies slightly depending on the ZOLEO device being connected and the version of the ZOLEO App. That article includes instructions for both the ZOLEO and the ZOLEO 1500.
Note: When linking a ZOLEO 1500, the ZOLEO App will prompt the user to enter the Bluetooth PIN printed on the label on the bottom of the device.
Once linking is complete, the device's ZOLEO SMS number and ZOLEO email address are linked to the new user's app through the Follow-Me feature. All new incoming SMS and email messages sent to the device will be delivered to the new user's app.
Note: The new user cannot see your existing conversations. SMS and email messages received after the device is linked are delivered to the new user's app. App-to-app conversations remain associated with each user's individual ZOLEO account and are never shared between users.
Update SOS and Check-In Contacts
SOS and Check-In contacts are managed through your MyZOLEO account, not the ZOLEO App.
If the person borrowing your ZOLEO device needs different SOS or Check-In contacts, update them before they begin using the device.
To update your contacts:
- Sign in to your MyZOLEO account.
- Navigate Devices & Plans.
- Select the device you wish to edit the contact for.
- Navigate to Contacts under your device's name
- Update the SOS and Check-In contacts as needed.
For detailed instructions, please refer to ZOLEO SOS & Check-In Contacts.
Important: Medical Assist is associated with the registered subscriber's account and cannot be shared. Someone borrowing your ZOLEO device will not have access to Medical Assist, regardless of how the device is configured.
Billing When Sharing Your ZOLEO Device
All satellite messaging usage is billed to the account associated with the ZOLEO device.
Your monthly service plan applies regardless of who is using the device. Billing cannot be split between multiple users.
If you plan to share your ZOLEO device for an extended period, keep this in mind when reviewing your monthly invoice.
Messages When Sharing Your ZOLEO Device
Your existing conversations remain on your smartphone after you disconnect the device.
The new user receives all new SMS and email messages sent to the device's ZOLEO number and email address from the time they connect.
App-to-app conversations remain linked to each user's individual ZOLEO account and are never shared between users.
Reconnect Your Smartphone
To reconnect your smartphone later:
- Ask the current user to disconnect the ZOLEO device from the ZOLEO App.
- Open the ZOLEO App on your smartphone.
- Follow the instructions in How To Link Your ZOLEO Device to the ZOLEO App.
