What Are ZOLEO SOS Contacts
ZOLEO SOS contacts are the individuals that emergency providers may contact during an SOS event if they need more information about your situation. More details on what happens during an SOS can be found in What Happens During an SOS.
Every ZOLEO device must have exactly two SOS contacts assigned at all times. This is a system requirement that can't be reduced. During an SOS event, emergency responders will attempt to reach one of your two SOS contacts at random. Once they reach one, they won't attempt to contact the other.
Who should be an SOS contact?
Your SOS contacts should be people who are familiar with your location and can provide useful information to emergency services. Suitable choices include family members, close friends, or trusted colleagues. It's recommended to avoid using third-party services as SOS contacts.
Note: Because two SOS contacts are required at all times, the Remove option won't appear when you're at the minimum. You'll need to replace the contact instead of removing them. See How to Replace a Mandatory SOS or Check-In Contact for steps.
What Are ZOLEO Check-In Contacts
A ZOLEO Check-In contact is someone who receives your Check-In messages sent from your ZOLEO device. Check-In messages say, "I'm OK, here's my location," along with a link to a map showing your current location. You can choose to send these updates via SMS, email, both SMS and email, or through the ZOLEO App. You also have the option to disable location sharing if you prefer.
If you have Location Share+, your Check-In contacts will also receive a breadcrumb trail of your location updates through the ZOLEO App.
A Check-In contact can be anyone you want to keep informed about your whereabouts and well-being. Your ZOLEO device requires a minimum of one Check-In contact and supports up to five. Check-In contacts can also be designated as SOS contacts.
Note: Because a minimum of one Check-In contact is required at all times, the Remove option won't appear if you only have one assigned. You'll need to replace the contact instead. See How to Replace a Mandatory SOS or Check-In Contact for steps.
How to Manage Your MyZOLEO Contacts
You can manage the contacts saved to your MyZOLEO account at any time. This includes updating a contact's email address, phone number, and preferred language, whether or not they're currently assigned to a ZOLEO device. If a contact is assigned to a device, any changes you make will automatically update their information on the device as well.
To manage your MyZOLEO contacts:
- Log in at www.myzoleo.com.
- Navigate to the SOS and Check-In Contacts menu. On mobile, find this under the My Account drop-down menu.
- You'll see all your saved contacts listed here. Use the Add contact button to add a new contact to your account.
- To edit an existing contact, update their details on their contact card and click Save.
Important: Saving a contact to your account doesn't automatically assign them to your ZOLEO device. To use a contact as an SOS or Check-In contact, you'll need to assign them to your device. See How to Add or Change Assigned Contacts on a ZOLEO Device for steps.
How to Add or Change Assigned Contacts on a ZOLEO Device
For a contact to become an active SOS or Check-In contact, they must be assigned to your ZOLEO device. Follow these steps to add or change your assigned contacts.
- Log in at www.myzoleo.com.
- Go to the Devices & Plans menu. On mobile, find this under the My Account drop-down menu.
- Under your device name, select the Contacts tab. On mobile, tap the three dots ... on the right, then select Contacts.
- To add or change contacts:
- For SOS contacts: Select the existing contact you want to change and replace it with new contact information. You must always have two SOS contacts assigned.
- For Check-In contacts: Select an existing contact to replace them, or choose an empty field to add a new one. In the Contact Method field, choose how the contact should receive Check-Ins (SMS, email, both, or via the ZOLEO App).
- To add a brand new contact: Click +ADD NEW CONTACT, complete the form, and click Save in the popup.
- To remove a contact, click their name and select Remove from the drop-down. If the Remove option doesn't appear, see Why the Remove Option May Be Missing for a Contact.
- When you're done making changes, click the green Save All button at the bottom of the page.
Why the Remove Option May Be Missing for a Contact
If you click on a contact's name in the Devices & Plans > Contacts section and the Remove option doesn't appear in the drop-down, it's because that contact is one of your minimum required contacts.
Every ZOLEO device requires a minimum of:
- Two (2) SOS contacts
- One (1) Check-In contact
To protect these minimums, the system prevents you from removing a contact that would bring you below the required number. This is a safety requirement to make sure your ZOLEO device is always properly configured for emergencies and Check-In messaging.
If you want to remove one of these contacts, you'll need to replace them with a new contact rather than simply deleting them. This ensures your device always meets the minimum contact requirement. Follow the steps in How to Replace a Mandatory SOS or Check-In Contact below.
How to Replace a Mandatory SOS or Check-In Contact
If the Remove option isn't available for a contact, you'll need to replace them with a new contact. This applies when you're at the minimum required number of SOS contacts (two) or Check-In contacts (one). You'll need to add the new contact first before the old one can be removed.
- Log in at www.myzoleo.com.
- Go to Devices & Plans, then select Contacts under your device name.
- Click on the contact you want to replace.
- Select +ADD NEW CONTACT from the options that appear.
- Enter the new contact's details and click Save in the popup.
- Assign the new contact to your device in place of the old one.
- Click the green Save All button at the bottom of the page.
Once the new contact is saved and assigned, the old contact will be removed from your device. The old contact's details will remain saved in your MyZOLEO account under SOS and Check-In Contacts unless you choose to delete them from there.
How to Ensure a Check-In Contact Receives Location Share+
Location Share+ (LS+) allows your Check-In contacts to see a breadcrumb trail of your location updates through the ZOLEO App. Location Share+ is delivered only through the ZOLEO App, while standard Check-In messages are sent according to each contact's chosen contact method (SMS, email, both, or the ZOLEO App).
For a Check-In contact to receive Location Share+ updates, both of the following must apply:
- The contact must be added and assigned to your ZOLEO device as a Check-In contact.
- The phone number saved in their contact information must match the number they're using for the ZOLEO App.
If your Check-In contact isn't receiving Location Share+ updates, check that their contact method is set to ZOLEO App and that their phone number matches their ZOLEO App account. You can update their contact details under the SOS and Check-In Contacts section in your MyZOLEO account at www.myzoleo.com.
