What Are Check-Ins?
Check-Ins are manual location updates you can send using the ZOLEO app or your ZOLEO device, letting your contacts know you're safe.
How Check-Ins count toward your message allowance depends on your plan:
- Prepare plan: Check-In messages count toward your monthly 50-message allowance.
- Protect plan: All messaging is unlimited — Check-Ins don't count toward any limit.
- Legacy Basic and In Touch plans: Check-In messages are unlimited and don't count toward your monthly message limit.
- Legacy Unlimited plan: Check-In messages are unlimited.
You can send Check-Ins to up to five contacts, managed through your MyZOLEO portal. See ZOLEO SOS & Check-In Contacts to learn how to add and manage your contacts.
Check-In messages can be sent via SMS, email, or the ZOLEO app. The message reads "I'm OK. My Location is..." and includes your coordinates, a link to a map, and your ZOLEO device's battery level. Recipients view your location as follows:
- SMS/Email: Opens your location in Google Maps.
- ZOLEO app: Opens the map directly within the app.

How To Send a Check-In Using the ZOLEO App
Before sending a Check-In from the ZOLEO app, confirm the following:
- Your ZOLEO device is powered on with a clear view of the sky.
- The ZOLEO app is linked to your device, displaying the Weather and SOS icons at the bottom of the screen.
If both icons are visible, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Chats screen using the bottom left icon in the app.
- Tap the Check-In button at the top of the screen — a green rectangle with a white checkmark.
- The Check-In will begin sending. Your ZOLEO device will emit a tone and flash green LEDs in a clockwise pattern while sending.
- Once sent, the tone will sound three times, and the flashing will stop. You can view the sent Check-In in your Check-In & Location Share+ thread within the app.
- If the Check-In fails, the LED will flash amber. You can attempt to send another, but your ZOLEO device will only try to send the message for 7–10 minutes before it expires.
How To Send a Check-In Using the ZOLEO Device
-
Power on your ZOLEO device. Confirm it's on by checking that the Power LED at the bottom right is flashing.
- Note: You can send a Check-In whether your ZOLEO device is connected to the ZOLEO app or not.
-
Press the Check-In button briefly.
- Important: Do not press and hold the button — this will attempt to start a Location Share+ session. If you don't have Location Share+, nothing will happen.
- Your ZOLEO device will emit a tone, and the LEDs will flash green in a clockwise pattern while sending. The tone will repeat three times, and the lights will stop flashing once the message is sent successfully.
