What is Locate?
Locate lets you request the current location of an eligible ZOLEO device from ZOLEO Track. When the device responds successfully, the updated location appears on the map and in the activity panel as a Location update.
You can use the Locate feature as an account owner or as a shared-link viewer.
Locate is useful when a device has not reported its location recently, and you want to confirm its current position. For example, you can use Locate to check on a device being used by a family member, crew member, or someone working in the field.
Locate does not send a message to the device owner. It requests the ZOLEO device's current location and waits for the device to respond through the available connection path.
Requirements for Using Locate
Locate is available only for eligible ZOLEO devices that meet all of the following requirements.
- Active device: The ZOLEO device must be activated.
- Location Share+: An active Location Share+ add-on is required.
- Device status: The device must be powered on and sufficiently charged.
- ZOLEO App: The ZOLEO device must be connected to the ZOLEO App.
- Coverage: The device must be able to reach cellular or satellite coverage.
- ZOLEO app: Version 6.6.0 or later.
- Device firmware: Version 7.1-0 or later.
Locate is not available for a device in an active SOS state. During SOS, emergency activity is prioritized, and the Locate button is hidden.
Locate does not work for a deactivated device, a turned-off device, or a device that cannot reach cellular or satellite coverage. If the device is indoors, blocked by terrain, or without a clear view of the sky, the response may fail or take longer.
How to Locate a ZOLEO Device
Use Locate when you want to request the current location of an eligible ZOLEO device. The Locate button appears in ZOLEO Track only when the selected device supports the feature.
To locate a ZOLEO device:
- Open ZOLEO Track.
- Select the ZOLEO device you want to locate.
- Select the Locate button (describe button and its location + add screenshot)
- Wait for the device to respond.
- Review the Location update on the map or in the activity panel.
If the request is sent successfully, the activity panel may display the request as Pending until the device responds. Once the response is received, ZOLEO Track automatically updates the map with the latest reported location.
Tip: Selecting Locate multiple times does not speed up the request. Multiple requests submitted within a short period are grouped together, so the device responds only once.
If the device does not respond within 30 minutes, the request expires, and the Locate button becomes available again so you can submit a new request.
A device activity panel is displayed over a blurred map. A yellow arrow points to the Locate button near the upper-left. Below, a message indicates that there is no activity within the selected date range.
Why Locate Requests Can Take Several Minutes
Locate requests are not processed immediately because a ZOLEO device does not continuously look for incoming requests. Instead, the device checks for waiting requests on its normal communication schedule and whenever it sends other activity, such as a Check-in message, a Location Share+ update, or an SOS alert.
If the paired smartphone has a cellular connection and the ZOLEO app is communicating with the device, a response typically arrives within 1 to 5 minutes.
If the request must be delivered over the Iridium satellite network, it can take approximately 6 to 15 minutes because the device checks for waiting messages during its scheduled communication intervals.
If no response is received within 30 minutes, the request expires, and the Locate button becomes available again. In some cases, the device's response may still arrive after the button is re-enabled.
What the "Could not Locate" Status Means
The Could not Locate status means the location request did not receive a response from the ZOLEO device within the allowed time. It represents the status of the request and is not a location update.
A Locate request may fail if:
- The ZOLEO device is powered off.
- The battery is depleted.
- The device is outside cellular or satellite coverage.
- The device does not have a clear view of the sky.
- The device is not eligible for Locate.
- The required ZOLEO app or firmware version is not installed.
Once the 30-minute waiting period has ended, you can submit another Locate request. Before trying again, confirm that the device is powered on, has sufficient battery power, and is able to connect to cellular or satellite coverage.
